River Horse Tavern: Potato Chowder

I have a habit of reading every book, note, or random piece of lore in video games. Baldur's Gate 3 has not dissuaded me from this in the slightest. In fact, because of it, I came across a lovely little book in Act 3 called Soups of the Realms.

This book can be found in the Open Hand Temple in Wyrm's Crossing. In it are two "recipes." One for Dippin Soup and one for Potato Chowder. Using the text from the game as a guide, I made the Potato Chowder, and it turned out quite well.

Here is the text from the game:

Here is the recipe I made based on that.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onion (I used bulbs from Egytpain Walking Onions from my garden and used the scrapes for garnish)

  • 3 large cloves of garlic chopped

  • salt & pepper

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 1/2 cups potatoes

  • 1/4 cup dry white wine

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • 3/4 cup heavy cream

  • Shredded cheese and green onions for garnish

Heat butter in a soup pot.

Once warm add salt, pepper, & onion to the pot. Sautee for 3-5 minutes until translucent.

Add in chopped garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Add flour to the mixture and stir until smooth/cooked.

Add 1/4 cup of dry white wine and stir until the wine has cooked off.

Add potatoes and chicken stock.

Bring to a boil, then let cook at a low rolling boil for 30 minutes.

While potatoes are cooking, heat up heavy cream.

Once potatoes are tender, mash some of them, then add warm cream.

Let simmer for 1 to 2 minutes.

Garnish with shredded cheese and green onions.
